Longboat Key Fire Rescue has taken ownership of a new rescue vehicle that will be used on area beaches to assist firefighter/paramedics in responding, caring and gaining access to patients off the beach when they’re injured or sick. Longboat Key Pass Bridge construction begins
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin repairs to the Longboat Key Pass Bridge on State Road 789 from north of Northshore Road on Longboat Key to south Coquina Park in Bradenton Beach. The work is set to begin this week and continue through April 30, 2012. The construction will be ongoing throughout the day and nighttime hours with a suspension of activity from Dec. 23 through Jan. 2 and Jan. 13-17. A spokesperson for FDOT said nighttime temporary lane closures will be controlled by flaggers and there will be no lane closures Friday through Sunday. During the construction, motorists will have to follow a 35 mph speed limit, but the bridge will not be closed to motorists or boaters.

Publix in store for Longboat
Longboat Key at long last has a date with Publix. The town’s Planning and Zoning Board will consider the completed site plan and application for a redeveloped Publix and Avenue of the Flowers Shopping Center.

Longboat Key Bridge due for repair
The Florida Department of Transportation announced a $1.1 million project to repair the Longboat Pass Bridge beginning in early November. A DOT press release said repairs would be on State Road 789 from North Shore Road on Longboat Key to the south end of Coquina Park in Bradenton Beach. The DOT did not have the exact start date of construction, a DOT spokesperson said.
